on a related note, since writing about him and his influence on my fic last night, it occurs to me how much I miss Gunjack.
And how much I hate him for it. For turning into a total asshole when he went to his first year of college after a lifetime of homeschooling; for letting the world overhaul his personality and thus erradicating one of the best friends I had ever had. I don't even know the person he is now.
You bastard.
He was the first person to really listen to my world- he always had great feeback. He usually understood my references and my plotlines, and was patient enough to let me explain that which he didn't. and he really cared about it, and about me.
and then he stopped- that is, he stopped caring about me all together, not just the Stories. The loss of a great fic partner seems pale in the light of the death of a friendship, but at the time I never thought I'd ever find anyone better in that respect.
But then I did. ; )
Still. You bastard.
And no, even if he did want to ever come chat again, I wouldn't do it. Not that he ever would.
anyway. Today's life-activity report, which I shall graciously LJ-cut.
I have been on my feet since 8:50 this morning, whence I started my great sojourn for galangal root and sarongs.
I literally have been walkign since then, with a 20 minute lunch break at 11:05, and the 2 minutes I sat down in the thrift store to try on shoes.
~I haven't recovered my other converse. the overpriced bastardy that is Bunker seems to be selling a smiliar pair for 40 bucks. pshyeah. right. anyway, the only shoes I had left that are meant for long-term walking...well, long story short, I have large blisters on both heels, and new cheap comfy boots that add an inch or so to my height. But that came later.~
I was 9 out of 10 blocks to the Indian Market store when it suddenly occured to me it was an African one. No worries, maybe it'll still carry some more eastern ingredients. I'd never been inside. It was still locked, and seemed to be mostly clothing.
the way back I stopped off at Bunny's (a 'beauty supply' store that seems to be directed mostly towards a balck clientele, and is run by a middle-aged asian couple. No, they didn't know of any nearby asian food stores either) to get, er, something related to my possible costume for Montreal.
I went to Aquarius while waiting for food to be open, and they'd sold the one sarong I had liked on my earlier visit. And I didn't like anythign else they had in the way of clothing. So, I hunted around and found other cool stuff instead, and decided to go ahead and start my Christmas shopping. (Although, I'm tempted to keep the totally rocking awesome Dark Crystal companion book I got for my sister. I need to look at it more first......)
lunch, then to Its A Beautiful Day, the hippie store where I got my great lightweight dress.
It turns out that dress was the only one in my size and fashion taste. what a waste of 40 minutes. I did, however, get the cassette for "A Civil Action" for two bucks, which is what it would have cost me to rent it as I'd been meanign to do.
And they only had one decent sarong! could it be, is our hero's search for comfortable summer wear at an end?!
~let me digress a moment on Sarongs, and why I love them. I got my first one a year or so ago, as a gift from Emambu. I wore it out to eat with my sister and made a guy curse appreciatively. You can wear them just as a skirt. You can wear them a dress. fold them right, and you can where them just as a top. You can use them are tablecloths; you can use them as wall hangings or doorway curtains. You can use them to decorate random parts of the House Of Hezekiah Tea Store, apparently. You can use them as small sheets when you know you'll just wind up with the covers at your knees anyway, on nights as hot as these. And they apparently come in varieties such as blue snake print. oooh yes.~
But in my morning quest for Galanga root -which other traverses of the morning failed to turn up- I had passed a store I had never been to, but seen once or twice. It's a couple blocks farther down that road south than I usually go (Ie, the comic store) but had earmarked it as an interesting place. And this morning, whiel it was still closed, I noticed some new signs. Signs like, "Final Closing, 25-50% off" and "Sarongs, $10". signs indeed.
So I return and it is open, and I enter for the first time, and lo, I am pissed. Pissed like last month when, after four years dying for pork buns, willign to trade joints off my hands or feet for them and lamenting there was no way to get them at school...three years of which Steph new me and she never bothered to mention that Bo Lings did Dim Sun on the weekends. Bo Lings, which is a little under 20 minutes walking distance from both the dorms and my current location. No no, stephanie has to wait until TWO MONTHS before I leave this state for good to randomly mention this fact, after listening to me whinge about 'no pork buns!' for the last two and a half years. *sigh*
anyway, now I am pissed becuase not only does this store ROCK HARDER THAN AN AC/DC CONCERT AND I HAD NEVER BEFORE GONE IN, but becasue they are CLOSING DUE TO LACK OF INTEREST. well, their location sucks. three more blocks east and they'd be on westport and doing great, but they're too close to troost and on a main road to get good walk-by interest.
But, I am cheered for several reasons. 1) I'm leaving soon anyway, so it's not like I'd be able to patronize them in the future, 2) they are going online with their catalogie of spiffy things and I'm on the mailing list, 3) the blowout sale prices kicked ass, and 4) they had an impressive collection of Sarongs. and M. Pena Sculptures. And replica and real weaponry. and jewelry. and and and-
Bachue: tell them what you did, Lyn.
*hangs her head* I was a bad girl. : (
...on the plus side, I pretty much finished all my my gift shopping for the calendar year.
Bachue: and how many people are getting sarongs for christmas?
...
I'm not sure yet.
Bachue: ...and?
and what? o.o ...IT WAS FIFTY PERCENT OFF!! I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF!!! NOTHING THAT HEAY SHOUDL BE SO CHEAP, AND THAT WAS EVEN BEFORE THE SALE PRICE! AND BEFORE THE MANAGER OFFERED ME AN EXTRA 10% OFF TO 'HELP ME MAKE UP MY MIND'!!**
**tip to all you kids out there: If you ever want to get a discount, try standing at the counter holding the sale object and telling the clerk to give you a few more minutes while you debate getting it right then. It may knock a few more dollars off the final cost.
um, anyway, I haven't been to bed yet and my feet hurt, and I've got a pile of sarongs to nest under, so I'm going to bed pretty soon.
Oh. and Wild Oats didn't have the galangal root either, so I guess I'll have to make my soup without it.
...and tomorrow, when I get the energy for it. I'm not leaving my apartment except for class and to buy groceries from now on. I have no reason too, and every time I go out I seem to find an excuse to spend money. But not any more!!! For I am DONE!!!
...except for that thing with the thing and the anime online.......
DAMMIT!!!!
*sound of head thunking on table repeatedly*
*sound of Lynati falling over*
*sound of gleebl gleebl sclup*
*sclup*
